TUBULAR MUCOUS GLANDS – 4
This page contains two images of mucous tubules.
Pay attentin to some of the features of mucous tubules:
– the various shapes of the tubular sections: some tubules are round, others U or V shaped, some are branched. This is due both to the different size and form of the tubules and mainly to the position on which each tubule was sectioned.
– the basophilic (light blue) of the cytoplasm of the secretory cells.
– the relatively wide tubular lumen.
– the somewhat ease ease to observe the cell limits.
– connective tissue around each tubule as well as around groups of tubules.
The upper image is a medium magnification of a group of mucous tubules. An excretory duct can be seen leaving one of the tubules. When you place the cursor or click on the image the secretory portion of one tubule becomes red, the excretory duct cells blue and its lumen yellow.
The lower image is at a smaller magnification and shows another group of mucous tubules. A large excretory duct can be seen to the right of the figure, placed in an almost vertical position. It is one of the several initial excretory ducts of the gland that probably carries the secretion of this group of glands and will further join excretory ducts of other groups of the gland.

A very different type of gland will be examined on the next page.
